When he was twelve years old, Cristobal started his work as the apprentice of a tailor. When he was a teenager he was sent to Madrid and that is where he was trained into becoming a tailor. Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1914. His designs were very popular and were even worn by the Spanish royal family. In 1937 he left Spain for Paris. He retired in 1968.

He had a reputation as a couturier of uncompromising standards and was referred to as "the master of us all" by Christian Dior. His bubble skirts and odd, feminine, yet ultra-modern shapes were trademarks of the house. The house of Balenciaga is now owned by the French multinational company PPR. The Balenciaga House gave so many romantic as well as office wear Balenciaga Perfume and Balenciaga Cologne to the world.
